Not exactly. When institutions are reviewing candidates' applications, they focus on students' overall
qualifications, including but not limited to GPA, GRE, TOEFL (some students might waive), relevant
internship experiences, and research background. The GRE score is not a perfect criterion for measuring
whether you are qualified or not. Admittedly, GRE scores matter when you have a similar background to
other candidates.
Yes. Not every program requires students to submit their GRE scores. A lot of programs at Columbia
University, New York University, John Hopkins University, Georgetown University, and Boston University
do not require GRE scores. Even though it is not mandatory, we recommend students take the exam.
No. You can prepare other materials while waiting for the final GRE scores. We highly recommend students
start preparing as soon as possible. For instance, composing essays and resumes in the early stage, as
well as requesting recommendation letters from your professors (many professors might decline your
request because they are already overloaded by other students' requests). Do not merely focus on a high
GRE score, and thus miss the best opportunity.
Yes. The number of offers is in a descending trend. Usually, during the fall, the admission office will
release 50% of offers. At this time, there are relatively fewer applicants. During the spring, the
office will only release 20% of the offers, but the number of applicants is overwhelming because most of
the students would choose to submit their applications when it is close to the deadline. So, the
earlier, the better.
The US: requires more materials than other countries with the most complicated procedures.
The UK: is relatively easier. Most of the programs require GPA, language tests, and recommendation
letters. G5 schools focus mostly on academic background.
Canada: requires GPA, language tests, recommendation letters, and essays. Some of the programs require
GMAT/GRE and are relatively harder.
Hong Kong: schools like The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and
The Chinese University of Hong Kong have lower acceptance rates.
Conclusively, programs in each country have their own strengths. Students should consider their
long-term plans when making decisions. So far, whether students want to enhance their academic ability
or to possess broader development space, studying in the US is the best choice.
